Gowdy was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and grew up in Spartanburg. He graduated from Baylor University in 1986 and the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1989. He closed this chapter of his career with a flawless record in the courtroom and was undefeated in political races. He’s since returned to South Carolina to practice law, teach, and speak passionately on issues related to law and justice.

After law school he clerked for a judge on the South Carolina Court of Appeals and then for a United States District Court trial judge.

From 1994-2000, as a federal prosecutor, Trey prosecuted the full range of federal crimes including narcotics trafficking, bank robbery, car jacking, kidnapping, child pornography cases, and the murder of a federal witness. He was awarded the Postal Inspector’s Award for the successful prosecution of J. Mark Allen, one of “America’s Most Wanted” suspects. He also received the highest performance rating a federal prosecutor can receive – two years in a row.

Before Congress, Gowdy was a federal prosecutor in South Carolina from 1994 to 2000 and the solicitor for South Carolina’s Seventh Judicial Circuit from 2000 to 2010. He chaired the House Select Committee on Benghazi from 2014 to 2016, which revealed Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

In 2000, he left the U.S. Attorney’s office to run for 7th Circuit Solicitor (District Attorney) in Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. As 7th Circuit Solicitor, Trey led an office of 25 attorneys and 65 total employees. He started a Violence Against Women Task Force, a Worthless Check Program, enhanced and expanded Drug Court, and implemented a Drug Mother Protocol designed to assist expectant mothers break the cycle of addiction.

He has been recognized statewide for his commitment to victim’s rights and drunken driving enforcement and nationally for excellence in death penalty prosecutions.

In 2010, he ran for congress to represent the 4th Congressional District (Greenville and Spartanburg Counties). While in congress he served on the Judiciary Committee, Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Intelligence Committee, Education and the Workforce Committee and Ethics Committee. He was also chosen to chair a Select Committee on the events occurring in Libya on September 11-12, 2012.

The event helped raise funds to support The Doctor Spot, a mobile medical mission, helping provide medical care to some of the most underserved areas in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

Lauren: That night in the air I just had the worst feeling.

911 Caller: I need an ambulance immediately. A girl just walked into an airplane propeller.

Lauren: God you’re in control, I pray that you protect me. When you’ve been through something so difficult, it almost seems like it’s someone else’s story. Because you are just living your life and you are progressing through it, but it just doesn’t feel real. Like sometimes I’m like, “Wait. What! This is like, the craziest story.” If I really just sit back and think about it. We went to our good friends house, which is on a little airport, north of our house in Plano. And so, someone was like, “Who wants to go look at Christmas lights?” And I’m very adventurous and I had gone flying a few times, and I was like, “Id love to!” And so, I went up first, and I just had the worst feeling, like something is about to happen and I don’t know what it is. I just remember very clearly, like gripping really tightly onto this seat, and just praying and I was like, “God you’re in control of my life, I pray that you protect me.” So we land and I’m still just feeling like somethings not right.

Voiceover Woman: In the dark of night, with the engine still running, 22 year old Lauren Scruggs exited the plane.

911 Caller: A girl walked into an airplane propeller. I need an ambulance immediately.

Dispatcher: Ok, was it moving when it happened to her?

911 Caller: Yes, I think it cut her hand off!

Voiceover Woman: Barley conscious, Lauren was medevacked to a trauma center where teams of specialists worked around the clock to save her life. Preforming six different surgeries on her hand, shoulder, face, and eye.

Lauren: I had a traumatic brain injury. I was hit through part of the head.

Voiceover Woman: Surgeons installed plates under the skin above and below her eye where her facial bones had been crushed, and removed fragments of her skull lodged in her brain.

Lauren: A lot of people even asked me like, “Isn’t it so crazy that you were so close to death?”

Voiceover Woman: Doctors managed to stabilize Lauren’s condition, but told her parents she might never regain her full mental capacity.

Julia Farbman (Interviewer): You heard people’s accounts of what happened that night. Was it hard to hear what actually went down?

Lauren: I don’t remember the traumatic part. I just woke up with the outcome and that was more shocking to me. So I was actually hit in the eye, which I didn’t lose initially. They were trying to save it for about two weeks. So they removed that and the loss of my left had was just immediate.

Julia: Do you feel like you ever lost faith in any of this?

Lauren: I feel like my relationship with God grew to a much deeper level during that time because nothing else was sufficient.

Today, Lauren Scruggs Kennedy is an author, American fashion journalist and blogger. When Lauren Scruggs Kennedy accidentally walked into the propeller of a prop plane following a flight to view Christmas lights, her story made international headlines.

Current Needs

The Foundation seeks funds to support its mobile pediatric clinic, The Doctor Spot. The unit provides free healthcare services for children ages 0-18 years who either have no insurance or who are Medicaid enrollees. Services include sick and well checks; immunizations; athletic exams; asthma treatment; vision, hearing, lead and obesity screenings; paid labs, prescriptions and x-rays for children with no insurance and Medicaid enrollees.

My name is Tom Edwards. I am a social worker for Mesquite ISD. This is our fourth annual back to school event. We had a great turnout this year in spite of the rain. It’s a free event for all of Mesquite ISD.

We have about 40,000 students in total and we’ll hopefully have 2,500 to 3,000 go through today. We do a little bit of everything at this event. It’s a community event, so everybody is welcome. We’ll have free immunizations, free physicals for our kids, free blood pressure checks, free shots provided by The Doctor Spot, free haircuts, and of course free backpacks at the very end.

We have a lot of community vendors here so we want folks to know what resources are available here. We want folks to be able to start out the school year all ready to go. We’re trying to remove barriers. It’s really expensive nowadays to get new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies for school, so this is one way that we can help families and kids so that there are no barriers when starting school.

We’re really grateful to The Doctor Spot. Many of our kids go there for their physicals, for sick visits or for shots. I work with a lot of our homeless kids and families and a lot of them struggle finding access to medical care. Our families that don’t have a permanent place to stay, whether they’re staying in a car, staying at a friend’s house or couch surfing, I can take them straight there and they’ll receive quality care. [Chandra] spends a long time with the kids and gets to know them well so she can give them comprehensive care. That’s really important because a lot of our kids don’t get that type of quality care a lot of times. We’re very fortunate that she’s out here and willing to see our kids.
