Since 2016, The Doctor Spot has grown into a vital medical home for underserved families. Nurse practitioner Marisa and a small but dedicated medical team compassionately treat up to 30 patients daily for well-child visits, chronic conditions, sports physicals, and minor injuries or illnesses.

Seeing young patients smile with delight when they can run and play freely again after treatment makes all the modest clinic’s hard work and lean budget worthwhile. Our faithful staff stretch resources and give selflessly out of shared conviction every child deserves a fair chance for health and happiness. We wish we could serve more families seeking help yet turned away when our schedule fills up.

But this time of embracing miracles and good tidings reassures us – that if God calls more hurting people to our door, He will make a way through generous friends who share our mission. He already brought Marisa’s talents and dedication to sustain operations. Her leadership and nurturing care inspire our team daily. We all draw hope from cherished young patients like one boy granted a second chance to dance after surviving harrowing exploitation. After recovering her confident voice again after disability surgery gave her mobility back.

Venafi provides innovative cybersecurity solutions to enterprise businesses and companies all over the world, including many of the Global 5000. In addition to their dedication to protecting their clients, Venafi is highly passionate about supporting local communities. Their executive team researched a number of nonprofits across northern Texas before choosing LifeSavers.

Recently, 120 Venafi engineers from around the world gathered in Dallas for a meeting. While they were in town, the Venafi team met with LifeSavers leaders to present the gift.

The Doctor Spot

The Doctor Spot is a mobile health clinic that travels throughout Dallas County to administer primary care. Many of the Doctor Spot’s patients are women and children in need, especially those without insurance or access to reliable transportation. The Doctor Spot offers well visits, sports physicals, sick checks, immunizations, and other types of care. The Doctor Spot also provides asthma care and medication, such as albuterol and prednisolone, for children in need.

Mobile Sonogram Unit

Like the Doctor Spot, the mobile sonogram unit is a retrofitted vehicle that travels to patients in need. The unit is equipped to provide free sonograms to pregnant women and also gives out pregnancy tests.

Items for single mothers at Upscale Resale

Upscale Resale is a high-end consignment shop that sells donated clothing, furniture, home decor, books, and other items. Upscale Resale is also a major support center for single and underprivileged mothers with new babies or young children. Expectant mothers can earn vouchers and coupons by taking free childcare and life skills classes with LifeSavers. Those vouchers can be redeemed for free car seats, baby supplies, and discounted items at Upscale Resale.

LifeSavers Foundation relies partially on generous donations from individuals and businesses alike to support its mission and operations. But much of the operating budget comes directly from Upscale Resale. Everything sold at Upscale Resale is donated by a member of the community. Volunteers check every item before deciding what will go on the sales floor. The remaining items are sent to other donation centers or recycling centers, depending on the condition.

The Venafi team had a chance to spend time with LifeSavers staff and volunteers. They met the clinic team the Doctor Spot and employees and volunteers from Upscale Resale.

“We looked at many nonprofit organizations throughout north Texas,” said Mike Dodson, Vice President of Worldwide Customer Security Strategy & Solutions, Venafi. “We were moved by LifeSavers’ mission and work, which is making a real difference where it matters: directly with people in need, at the point of need.”

Venafi’s gift will make a profound difference in the lives of many women and children throughout Dallas county. Their donation will cover the costs of important medical care, critical baby supplies, and medications for children.

As the Christmas and New Year’s holidays approach, the Board of Directors has been notified of a $20,000 matching gift opportunity that will be available through December 31, 2018. Receiving funds to match this gift would be the culmination of a successful year ministering to underserved women, children and families in the Dallas area.

God has allowed LifeSavers to offer services with its two programs:

1. The Doctor Spot Mobile Pediatric Clinic which offers free medical services to uninsured children ages 0-18 in Mesquite and Garland ISD’s and, beginning January 1, 2019, Dallas ISD. The Board is expecting a 10% increase in patients from 2017 which totaled 1,364. To date, the number of children treated stands at 1,372!

Chandra, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, encountered a seventeen-year-old girl who came to the unit because she had missed a vein while shooting up meth. Her father had “introduced” her to meth when she was 12, and she has been using it ever since. Her physical injury was a hematoma, but her mental and psychological injuries are more far-reaching. Chandra spent time counseling her and praying with her. The Doctor Spot is reaching many forsaken teens. “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” John 4:35

2. LifeSavers Upscale Resale store has had over 860 clients in 2018 comprised of single moms, children and families who come to the store for assistance. That number is 15% more than 2017.

A young woman named Nahid came with her 3 children to the store. She is a victim of family violence and was in need of assistance for herself and her children. “Being kind to the poor is like lending to the Lord. He will reward you for what you have done.” Prov. 19:17

My name is Tom Edwards. I am a social worker for Mesquite ISD. This is our fourth annual back to school event. We had a great turnout this year in spite of the rain. It’s a free event for all of Mesquite ISD.

We have about 40,000 students in total and we’ll hopefully have 2,500 to 3,000 go through today. We do a little bit of everything at this event. It’s a community event, so everybody is welcome. We’ll have free immunizations, free physicals for our kids, free blood pressure checks, free shots provided by The Doctor Spot, free haircuts, and of course free backpacks at the very end.

We have a lot of community vendors here so we want folks to know what resources are available here. We want folks to be able to start out the school year all ready to go. We’re trying to remove barriers. It’s really expensive nowadays to get new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies for school, so this is one way that we can help families and kids so that there are no barriers when starting school.

We’re really grateful to The Doctor Spot. Many of our kids go there for their physicals, for sick visits or for shots. I work with a lot of our homeless kids and families and a lot of them struggle finding access to medical care. Our families that don’t have a permanent place to stay, whether they’re staying in a car, staying at a friend’s house or couch surfing, I can take them straight there and they’ll receive quality care. [Chandra] spends a long time with the kids and gets to know them well so she can give them comprehensive care. That’s really important because a lot of our kids don’t get that type of quality care a lot of times. We’re very fortunate that she’s out here and willing to see our kids.

Internationally, Speaker Gingrich is known as a Fox News contributor. He is a Senior Advisor at Dentons, the world’s largest law firm with more than 6,500 lawyers in 50 countries and offices in more than 125 cities. He advises the firm’s world-class Public Policy and Regulation practice. He is also a Senior Scientist at Gallup.

Speaker Gingrich is an expert on world history, military issues, and international affairs. He served on the Terrorism Task Force for the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2005, he co-chaired the Task Force on U.N. Reform, a bi-partisan Congressional effort to reform the United Nations. Additionally, Newt served as a Member of the Defense Policy Board, was the longest-serving teacher of the Joint War Fighting course for Major Generals and has instructed officers from all five U.S. services as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Professor at the National Defense University.

As June closes and July begins, the medical outreach of The Doctor Spot supported by The LifeSavers Foundation is well on the way into its second year of serving the Dallas community.

Over the past year, this new mobile medical unit served over 1600 children ages 0-18 throughout different communities in Dallas. Whether it was north, south, east, or west, the Doctor Spot and its team of caring healthcare professionals made rounds to help any child they could find who was in need.

This year, the team partnered with different community locations, like the Mesa Ridge Apartment complex, to provide care to local residents. They also came on campus to various elementary, middle, and high schools to set students up for success by giving care during school hours or coming in before the year started, like at Mesquite High School to be a part of the Back to School Fair. Lastly, along with The LifeSavers Foundation, they were in attendance at Operation Care International’s annual Christmas Gift Outreach event providing pediatric medical care.

Moving forward, the only direction this life-saving team wants to go is up. With a new year ahead and hundreds of more people finding out about The Doctor Spot, they’ll want to make sure they can sustain this valuable Dallas charity program and continue to grow to meet the outreach need.

This is where you come in.

Although it’s a fairly new concept, mobile medical units have been proven to significantly help communities in various major cities like Memphis, Miami, Houston and San Antonio, and the Dallas communities reached by The Doctor Spot have found the same. However, there are over 675,000 children living in the Dallas area and about 25% live under the poverty line. The Doctor Spot can only continue to grow as long as people like you get involved.

If your neighbor is in need, point them in direction of the mobile medical unit before things are so bad that they have to go to the ER. The daily location changes but a monthly schedule can always be found on the website and day or week of updates can be found on the Doctor Spot Facebook page.

As for your personal involvement, the easiest thing to do is simply donate finances here. If you have some extra time on your hands, consider volunteering at The LifeSavers Foundation Richardson Upscale Resale Store, where the profits help fund The Doctor Spot and many other charity projects around Dallas. Lastly, if you want to do some late spring cleaning, bring any gently used clothes and goods down to the store or call if you need a furniture pickup. It might not be the thrift store or upscale resale store nearest to you but it is certainly one worth driving the extra miles.
