Upscale Resale is operated by the LifeSavers Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women and children in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The revenue from Upscale Resale supports LifeSavers’ essential programs and services, including:

• The Doctor Spot, a mobile clinic that brings healthcare services to children and families throughout the community. The Doctor Spot performs well visits, sports physicals, and sick checks, administers immunizations, and more. Our mobile clinic travels to specific locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to care for people who might otherwise have a hard time getting to the doctor.
• The mobile sonogram unit, a second mobile clinic that provides free sonograms, pregnancy tests, and support for women.
• Baby supplies for new mothers. Women can take parenting and childcare classes to earn vouchers that they can redeem for free diapers, car seats, and other important items they might need for their new baby. All of these supplies are picked up at Upscale Resale.

The people we serve come back to become patrons.

LifeSavers has been supporting women experiencing unexpected pregnancies since 2004. We’ve provided care, guidance, and supplies for hundreds of women over the years, often when they’re feeling overwhelmed or afraid.

Many of the women we’ve supported are now regular shoppers at Upscale Resale. They have families, well-rounded lives, and successful careers, and they contribute meaningfully to their community. Thankfully, you don’t need magic powers to find excellent furniture at the thrift store. You just need the right strategy and the right mindset, and you’ll discover hidden gems too.

Know your budget.

Thrift store furniture will be cheaper than brand new furniture, but it won’t be as cheap as thrift store clothing. You could still shell out a few hundred dollars for your unique piece. Establish a budget before you start shopping and check prices right away. It’s a bummer to fall in love with a piece and then discover the price is double your budget.

Be ready to buy furniture today.

Going to the thrift store is not like going to a big box store. You can take a few days to decide whether you want that table from Ikea. It’ll still be there when you go back. However, it can be an overwhelming experience if you don’t have a plan. So, we’ve made a list of our favorite strategies for planning your next thrift shopping trip.

Keep a thrift wishlist.

Half the fun of thrifting is that you never know what you’re going to find, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look for what you want. Keep a running list on your phone or somewhere else of specific things you’re looking for. Give it a once-over before heading inside so you can keep an eye out for that perfect leather jacket, ’70s jeans, or vintage desk lamp you’ve been hunting for.

If your wishlist includes furniture, make sure you have the measurements and dimensions you’re looking for. Doing so will save you the heartache of bringing home what seemed like the perfect desk, only to discover that it doesn’t fit in your office.

Know your clothing measurements and try stuff on.

Sizing, especially in women’s clothes, is notoriously inconsistent. And this is especially true if you’re shopping vintage, which tends to run very small compared to modern clothing, and usually doesn’t account for tall or plus-sized people.

If you have the option to try on a piece before buying it, do it! But just in case that’s not possible, keep a list of your measurements. Then you can at least make an informed guess as to whether or not an item will fit.

While the teenager was playing, there was a gentleman shopping in the store who listened to him play and overheard that funds to purchase the piano were unavailable. After the boy and his mother left, he approached the cash register and indicated that he wanted to purchase the piano anonymously for the young man because he “wanted him to have it”. It truly was a selfless gesture on the part of the customer.

After hearing that the piano had been purchased for her son, the mother brought the teenager back to retrieve the piano. Both were very appreciative that a Good Samaritan had come to their rescue and provided the piano. Now, her son will have the ability to practice anytime.

LifeSavers Foundation board members, volunteers and staff experience God’s mercy through the resale store continuously. We are grateful and blessed to do so.
