To volunteer is to give of your time and your skills to support a cause you care about. You can be a volunteer firefighter for your community. You can be a volunteer baby rocker at your local children’s hospital. You can answer phones, feed animals, read to children, and care for the elderly. The possibilities are endless.

Volunteering is a gift, one that extends well beyond the activity you’ve volunteered to do. Here are four surprising things you may not know about volunteering:

Volunteering is good for your health.

Whether you’re hauling heavy boxes at the food shelf or stuffing envelopes, volunteering can make you feel better. According to the Mayo Clinic, people who volunteer on a regular basis tend to be healthier than people who don’t. Volunteering can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of stroke, heart failure, and more. You don’t need to choose a strenuous activity to reap the physical benefits. Even just handing out flyers or helping to organize a closet is great for you.

The first time we met her she was pregnant and had come to the LifeSavers Upscale Resale Store to take advantage of our voucher program, which provides structure and guidance along with discounts on clothes and diapers. She was in a very difficult place.

She’s doing better now and shows up regularly – every few weeks. We’re always happy to see her. Happy that we can help her find the items she needs at a price she can afford. But, also because she brings her used plastic grocery bags! 

Happy, not just because we really need (reuse) those bags, but also because we love the look on her face as she hands them over. She’s benefitted from our services and now she’s taking her own initiative to give back. It’s about the repurposing of more than just grocery bags.

At LifeSavers Upscale Resale Store we’re in the repurposing business. We repurpose donations in the form of goods, and goodness in the form of giving.

We also care about the environment. Thrift stores reuse tons of goods. In fact, Goodwill alone diverts more than 3 billion tons of clothing and goods from landfills each year. While we also play a part in that process, there is still a huge amount of waste. Take clothing for example: 

• Each year, over 21 billion pounds of textile waste goes into landfills
• According to Planet Aid a simple cotton shirt uses up over 700 gallons of water to manufacture it
• The average American throws out about 82 pounds of textile waste per year

Reusing clothes and goods is not a new idea. Those of us who are more “seasoned” (older) remember hand-me-downs. Those handed down to weren’t always excited about it. But, it made good sense economically and environmentally. 

Interestingly, we now see many young people in our stores who could afford new clothes but prefer something a bit more distinctive. In fact, it’s reported that Millenials and Gen Z’s are transitioning to thrift store shopping 2.5 times faster than any other generation. 

Your donations of gently used clothing, household goods, furniture, and other merchandise, are having a positive impact on the environment as well as the souls we seek to serve. 

There are plenty of great organizations out there that help repurpose clothing and other goods. But, we offer the opportunity to repurpose for an even greater purpose. Your generous donations providing funding and supplies for young mothers in crisis.

We had the opportunity to listen again to the stories of young ladies who have been victimized by the sex industry, and hear them talk about the ways NFNL has helped them. As one put it, “they’ve saved my life.”

It’s hard to imagine some of the difficulties these women have been through, but they’ve been given hope by this wonderful organization. As one put it, “They’ve given me the stability that I needed to transition.”

Almost without exception, each of the young ladies said they had been introduced to NFNL by a friend. In fact, it all started when a young girl visited Preston Road Church of Christ and said, “I can’t do this anymore.” The church took on the challenge of helping her step out of the sex industry, and she in turn brought another friend for help. At that point a ministry began to take shape and a program was developed to provide the material and spiritual support for positive change.

We, at The LifeSavers Foundation are proud to introduce those of you who don’t know our friends at NFNL and to thank those of you are already friends and supporters. Thanks to you, we are able to help these young women find New Friends and New Life!

We also like to share stories about how we’ve touched others and how they’ve touched us. Thank you to our friend Shelley for sharing the story of Emma and his wife.

Emma is a pastor in Uganda and he has also completed nursing school and is in his last year of medical school.

They had an amazing time at the LifeSavers Resale Store! They collected items for the children and people in their church in Uganda.

They have 500 people in their church with three services.  They said they will pass out the items at Christmas and there will be a line of 200 children or more lined up to receive an items.

Emma has a very sweet testimony on how God saved him out of his Muslim background and Islamic religion. His father was a sheik in the Islamic faith; something equivalent to a pastor.

Thank you for opening up your hearts and your store to share with so many in need.  I will ask Emma to email me pictures of the children receiving the clothes.

As the Christmas and New Year’s holidays approach, the Board of Directors has been notified of a $20,000 matching gift opportunity that will be available through December 31, 2018. Receiving funds to match this gift would be the culmination of a successful year ministering to underserved women, children and families in the Dallas area.

God has allowed LifeSavers to offer services with its two programs:

1. The Doctor Spot Mobile Pediatric Clinic which offers free medical services to uninsured children ages 0-18 in Mesquite and Garland ISD’s and, beginning January 1, 2019, Dallas ISD. The Board is expecting a 10% increase in patients from 2017 which totaled 1,364. To date, the number of children treated stands at 1,372!

Chandra, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, encountered a seventeen-year-old girl who came to the unit because she had missed a vein while shooting up meth. Her father had “introduced” her to meth when she was 12, and she has been using it ever since. Her physical injury was a hematoma, but her mental and psychological injuries are more far-reaching. Chandra spent time counseling her and praying with her. The Doctor Spot is reaching many forsaken teens. “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” John 4:35

2. LifeSavers Upscale Resale store has had over 860 clients in 2018 comprised of single moms, children and families who come to the store for assistance. That number is 15% more than 2017.

A young woman named Nahid came with her 3 children to the store. She is a victim of family violence and was in need of assistance for herself and her children. “Being kind to the poor is like lending to the Lord. He will reward you for what you have done.” Prov. 19:17

Ever think what kind of stories come from the items donated at your local thrift store? Here’s a story you soon won’t forget from Upscale Resale’s Assistant Manager, Becky Ellerman. We’re here to share the love of God with these people and to help them to, as they place their donations, just to meet them where they are. There’s a lot of stories about why people bring donations into the store.

Because we’re a nonprofit and we receive donations from generous givers, then what’s really neat for customers sometimes is they don’t even know where this money goes. They don’t even know what it’s for. It’s really fun for us to be able to share with them that the proceeds of this ministry, and everything that happens in Upscale Resale, goes to help support women and children in ministries across the city and also The Doctor Spot, which is incredibly exciting.

Recently we received this old-timey telephone and it was from 1910 and it was really cool. It wasn’t operational, but I had a woman within 24-hours come up to the counter and she laid it on the counter. What’s so fun about it is, it’s just like “Okay what are you gonna use this for?” because it’s all about repurposing something. It’s so much fun to see people do that.

Anyway, she then told me that she works at an assisted living center just around the corner from here. They have these rooms called memory rooms and it helps them to recall earlier times when their memory wasn’t impaired. And she said, “You just won’t believe it! You play music and they can remember it. You bring a telephone in there and, all of a sudden, they’re back in that mindset and then they feel empowered and families can come speak to them”. So that is without a doubt, the best repurpose story I’ve heard so far.
